Afghan Crochet Patterns

The Basics of Afghan Crochet Patterns

If you are into the hobby of crocheting, then you have probably heard about Afghan crochet. This particular type of crochet is also known as Tunisian crochet. This type of crochet used the Afghan hook, which has an elongated form, and has a stopper just right about at the end of its handle.

There is a particular way of doing Afghan crochet. The piece itself is done in two halves. For the first half, the rows go from right to left. For the second half, the rows go from left to right. The piece is never turned, which means that all crocheting will be done on one side of the piece. This style is strictly implemented on all Afghan crochet patterns you can find.

Once you have your starting or your first chain, you can now start working on your first row. You have to insert the Afghan hook in your chain first. While doing so, you pull the yarn's free end, making a loop out of that. But remember not to take the loop off the hook when you insert the Afghan hook into the next chain. Make sure to hold on to that loop. When your rows are done, you will have made the same number of loops and stitches across the first half.

For your second half, just repeat the same steps, save for the motion of your stitches, which should be now from left to right. Another difference is that the loops should be worked off the hook this time around, unlike what happened in the first half.

Now that you know the basics of Afghan crocheting, you can move on to the next step, and that is trying out Afghan crochet patterns on you own. And Afghan crochet patterns are quite popular among crochet enthusiasts because these patterns are indeed of good material.
